Few researchers exist that expand our scientific horizon radically and, at the same time, deepened our understanding of diseases. Among these researchers is Prof. Dr. Erwin Neher from the Max Planck Instiute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen. For his ground breaking work he was awarded - jointly with Bert Sakmann - the Nobel prize for physiology and medicine in 1991. He developed a method that allows to measure small currents in cells, especially nerve cells, creating a way to explore the mystery of the electric currents in the brain. This electrophysical method also accelerated the development and testing of new medicines. The importance of Prof. Nehers research is comparable to the discovery of the DNA double helix by Watson and Crick. Prof. Neher report on his work in his lecture, titlted
