Inspiring Future Scientists: Girls’ Day 2025 at MPINB

On April 3, 2025, our institute took part in the Girls' Day – a nationwide career orientation day for girls, supported by the German Federal Ministry for Family Affairs and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The aim of the Girls' Day is to introduce girls to professions and fields of study where women are still underrepresented, such as IT, engineering and natural sciences.

Organized by our Equal Opportunities Office, the event offered a unique opportunity for young students to gain hands-on insights into our research here at MPINB. Throughout the day, participants had the chance to visit our research Department of Computational Neuroethology, our research group Neurobiology of Flight Control, our Core Facility for Microscopy, and our in-house workshop . From biology, physics and engineering to microscopy and building setups for scientific experiments, the girls experienced firsthand what it’s like to work in an interdisciplinary research environment.

Whether they were peering into microscopes, learning how scientific instruments are built and maintained, or experimenting with lab techniques, the girls showed a remarkable eagerness to learn and explore. We would like to express our sincere thanks to all the students who participated, and to our dedicated staff members and scientists who volunteered their time to guide, explain, and inspire.

Initiatives like Girls’ Day are a vital part of our ongoing commitment to promoting equal opportunities. By opening our doors and sharing our passion for science, we hope to spark long-term interest and confidence in young women to pursue careers in research, technology, and beyond.

We look forward to welcoming more curious minds next time!
